Licensed Master Social Worker
Welcome! My name is Shoshana Cook and I am a mental health therapist with a passion for creating a safe and welcoming environment that allows others to reach their fullest potential by exploring their thoughts, developing insight, and learning new patterns to succeed.
I received my BA in Psychology from The University of Arizona and my MA in Social Work from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. I began working in 2019 with adolescent males in a residential treatment center in Frederick where I was trained in DBT or Dialectical Behavior Therapy. From there, I had the opportunity to work with adults struggling from severe mental health disorders, including those who struggled with substance use. I worked with that population until late 2023. I interned at a private practice in Bethesda, and I have experience with those living with depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, (C)/PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia & personality disorders.
I approach therapy with a non-judgmental and trauma-informed lens. I use a client-centered, strength-based approach and believe that the body and nervous system holds memories from our past. I strive to help you work through those memories to help you grow in the present. I believe in getting to the root of the problem versus putting a band aid on it. I use the following interventions in therapy: mindfulness, polyvagal therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), expressive therapies, bilateral stimulation, and Internal family systems (IFS), depending on your wants and needs. My main goal is to create a safe environment where you can feel comfortable to explore and prosper at your own pace.
